National Grilled Cheese Day took place on April 12.
The grilled cheese sandwich was designed to be made in an oven but now people cook it in different ways. Grilled cheese can be made in a skillet, oven, or toastie press.
A toastie press, also known as pie iron, or sandwich maker has two hinged metal plates that heat up and press both sides together to make a sandwich.
A lot of students enjoy a simple grilled cheese sandwich, cooked similarly and with just a slice of cheese. However, everyone has their own version of a grilled cheese sandwich.
Sixth grader Keila Perez and eighth grader Kalyse Johns said they liked to put extra cheese on their sandwich.
Johns said “I’ve never really tried grilled cheese before, but my mom made it for me once and it was really yummy, it was extra cheesy. I didn’t pay attention to how she made it, but I would try it again.”
Various types of cheeses that can go with a grilled cheese sandwich. For example, the classic American cheese, mozzarella, fontina and sharp cheddar, gruyere or havarti.
Eighth grader Nathan Alvarado-Rodriguez and seventh grader Kevin de los Santos both use white bread for their grilled cheese. Seventh grader Mason Avina uses wheat bread for his grilled cheese sandwiches.
“Grilled cheese is delicious, I put butter on a pan that is on medium heat, and a little oil for the bread too. I grill the bread, heat up the cheese and put it on the bread. I use wheat bread and American cheese,” he said.
The most popular bread people like to use white bread, whole wheat, and sourdough bread.
However other breads can also taste great as a grilled cheese sandwich.
Avina also said he liked his bread extra toasted, not a lot of students said they liked it like that.
No matter how a grilled cheese sandwich is made, there’s bound to be one just for you.
