What’s the difference between a fruit and vegetable?
To start, vegetables are any part of a plant that’s considered edible.. Like carrots and beets are technically roots while lettuce and cabbage are leaves.
Some vegetables also come from flowers, just like fruits. The only difference between a fruit and vegetable is that fruits have seeds, yet some people might wonder if some fruits and vegetables come from flowers why are they not counted the same? Well, when vegetables grow out of flowers, they grow from the outside while fruits grow from the inside of the flower.
Tomatoes are biologically fruits, but many people tend to confuse them with vegetables.
Students from Southeast’s opinion on tomatoes
Yet it can still be quite confusing for some students when it comes to tomatoes.
Student Cynthia Rivas spoke about how she thought a tomato was a vegetable because of its looks. Which can be quite deceiving as they aren’t as appealing as other fruits.
The looks of a tomato can be kind of deceiving, and as well as the taste since they aren’t a very sweet fruit.
“I think it’s a vegetable because it tastes nasty and it’s NOT recommended. I only like it with certain foods like hamburgers. I don’t like them because they’re really wet and it’s just nasty. I would prefer carrots because they don’t taste as bad.” Said by eighth grader Pedro Felix.
Pedro as well as other students aren’t quite fond of tomatoes, mainly due to the fact that their texture isn’t the most pleasant. It can be quite gross to many people.
“I dont like them cause I dont like the textures of them. I think they’re fruits because they have seeds in them, all fruits have seeds. I would prefer watermelon over tomatoes because it’s yummy. And I like the consistency of it, it also tastes better.” Said by eighth grade student, Asher Ramirez.
One of the main reasons why students don’t like tomatoes is because of its texture.
“No, I don’t really like tomatoes because of its insides. The texture is too weird. I like fruits cause they’re sweet and vegetables aren’t. But I think that tomatoes are fruits though, they have seeds.” Said by seventh grader Hailie Diaz.
Some fruits are considered vegetables, (ex. Tomatoes and cucumbers) since they aren’t sweet, and many people consider fruit sweet.
