On Jan. 12 at Southeast Middle. P.E teachers began to do the Fitnessgram PACER test with all students. The PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) also known as a multistage lung capacity and endurance test that gets harder and harder while doing it.
8th grade student Dylan Avonce said this about the PACER, “I feel like it was challenging because it got faster and harder with each level and beep.”
The PACER test takes place in the gym. A timed sound controls the pace for each lap. Speed then grows with each level and beeps. Mr. Munguia said that a score of 36 or more sprints for the boys and 26 or more sprints for the girls pass.
With her PACER test coming soon, 7th grader Roselyn Simental said, “Last year when I did the PACER and the other tests as a sixth grader I remember it being challenging and tiring because of how fast paced the tests were.”
Students who do not have a hard time doing the PACER typically tend to do sports outside of school. For some 6th graders the PACER tests feel hard for them because a version of the PACER test they did in elementary did not include some exercises.
Other FitnessGram tests check strength and control like push-ups can curl-ups. A passing score ranges from 14 or more passes for push-ups and 26 or more for the curl-ups, said Munguia.
