Southeast Middle School hosted a spring concert on May 26 through May 27 and it took place in the school’s auditorium. On the 26th, students in band, strings, and guitar performed and on the 27th students in piano held their recital.
“I’m kinda happy, I’ve been playing along with my percussionist members along with practicing during homeroom,” stated Andy Sanchez, an 8th grader in SEMS.
Many of the kids have practiced during their spare time and prepared for the concert. They even had the opportunity to go and practice during their homeroom and lunch in Mr. Astorga’s room.
Despite some students feeling confident, some students felt the opposite. Some of the students believed they would make a mistake which made them feel nervous.
“I’m really nervous about the concert ‘cause like I’m scared of making a mistake,” said Natalia Cruz, an 8th grader.
The concert caused some students to stress, especially since the second concert of the year had higher expectations. The kids now have to play more advanced songs along with having to sound better compared to their last performance.
“I already did one last semester but that one was only one song so it was like easier, but now this one is more songs and they’re harder so like im kinda nervous,” said Chelsey Ruiz.
Students made sure to practice extra hard in order for their concert to come out good. They make sure to get as much practice as they can, like Natalia Cruz who said that she planned to practice a lot and she wouldn’t give up and she’ll ask for help when she needs it.
So although the concert was expected to have harder and longer songs, such as “Gaelic Castle” and “Medieval Kings” for strings and “The Tempest” and “Infinity” for the band, the students were confident enough to think positively on how they would do.
Many of the students thought they did well. Despite songs becoming trickier they performed good. Chelsey Ruiz believed she did good for the main part but said she made some mistakes and wished she did better.
“I wished I watched what I was doing because I got nervous so like being calm maybe would have helped me not miss a key,” stated Ruby Agatub
Overall the concert was a success with many students parents showing up to show support for their kids.

I really enjoyed reading this article. I liked how you talked about the stress that some students were having with performing a bigger concert. Great job!
