SRLA officially started on Sept.3 at Southeast Middle School and about 80 students signed up.
SRLA, a program for students which trains the students to complete a marathon. Students can sign up by contacting coaches like Mr. Zamudio, Mr, Yamashita, and Ms. Lipp.
“I love coaching SRLA, it’s a way to give back to the kids and I really love to motivate new runners for the marathon and 5k, plus I push them to do more and try harder,” Mr. Zamudio said.
Out of the 80 students that signed up 12 returners have gone back, most of whom finished the marathon. The returning runners have given advice to the new runners.
Returning runner by the name of Kenny Terrazas said “At the SRLA practices it’s ok to have fun but not too much fun or else you’ll get in trouble and also take the practices seriously.”
68 new runners joined this school year (2025), with a mix of seventh and eighth graders. Some have expressed how they felt nervous about the 5k.
Bailey Lawrence, a new SRLA runner said “I joined SRLA to get more stamina so I could go outside more… then I feel excited but then again I’m worried I’m not going to be able to do it.”
When they ran the 5k it was at dodger stadium and the run started at 5 p.m but check in happened at 3 p.m. The 5k is a run that is 3.1 miles.
