Returning from winter break with mixed feelings, some students received a surprise: their classes had been switched.
About 85.7% of students who completed a survey responded that they did not get their classes switched. However, 14.3% did get their classes switched, mostly eighth grade DREAMS students.
Eighth Grader Fernando Castillo felt heartbroken since the class that got switched from his schedule had become one of his favorite classes. Fernando also stated that his teacher had missed a lot of class.
Lucio Alvarado, an eighth grader DREAMS student also got his classes switched for the same reason. He expressed that he felt a bit sad because Mr. Dang was a good teacher but also said since he switched classes he learned more.
Mr. Dang leaving Southeast Middle School because he had gotten another job caused a majority of the class to change schedules..
Mr. Dang´s former student , Robert Soto, stated that he felt nervous at first because he was going to receive a whole new class and teacher.
Ms. Rachel, a new DREAMS math teacher, was impacted by this sudden change since Mr. Dang left the school, students who got their classes got her as their new teacher.
“I was really excited to meet new students,” stated Rachel.
She also felt a little nervous about it because she had to lose the period she already had and start fresh. Ms Rachel thought this “was the least disruptive” way to switch classes.
Ms. Garnica’s eighth grade history teacher also got students rearranged to her classes. She had no doubt about this change since it these were her same students who only got their periods switched.
She also expressed that it was a great opportunity for students because she felt maybe students needed an environmental change, but also concerned about her students because those same students who got switched originally made friends in their other classes.
Talking about this topic of classes getting switched, Yaritzy Vasquez an eighth grader DREAMS student also got her classes switched but for a different reason. She explained that she didn’t like her old history class and decided to switch to a SEMS history class.
