According to a poll on Schoology, 47.6% of students believe that social media consumes a lot of time. 30.2% of students spend more than 8 hours on their phones daily.
Kids could use the internet communicating with friends or family, watching educational or entertainment videos, playing games, etc.
“If they spend too much time on social media it can affect their brain and how they think overall,” eighth grader Aaron Luna stated.
It can affect their brain in ways such as reducing their attention span, interfering with their learning, reduces sleep, and give risk of mental health issues.
The cons of social media include teenagers not going outside as often and as well as less sun . Social media can also reduce sleep and give a lot of misinformation. Pew Research Center states that the percentage of teenagers owning a phone today went up 73% then in 2014-2015.
Despite this, 45.5% of students see social media as a good thing. An 8th grader named Juan Moreno had a different opinion on social media.
“Social media helps you meet and befriend people online and can also give you advice,” Juan Moreno stated.
Overall the pros of social media include connecting with friends or family online, finding and making connections from similar interests, and using social media for educational or informational purposes.
