Aggretsuko is a Japanese anime created by Rarecho, a prominent animator in his community, licensed by Sanrio. The show started all the way back in 2016, originally airing on the channel TBS, but ended up being picked up by the streaming platform Netflix on April 20, 2018, for a worldwide release. The show has on the platform for streaming ever since where it now garners thousands of viewers per month becoming one of the most prominent and successful animated shows according to Netflix.
Now you may be thinking, “Alright, I know how the show’s created, and by whom, what could it be about?” Well, the basic run down goes like this. Aggretsuko best described as a romantic comedy following the day-to-day life of Retsuko, a 25-year-old red panda accountant with a secret passion for death metal. Sanrio themselves described Aggretsuko with, “Yet despite her cute appearance, something deep within her is filled with rage.”
Each episode consists of her altercations with her co-worker friends, building relationships, and hiding her secret passions. Retsuko awaits a nice partner who will marry her and support all her needs to pop into her, she’s sick of the accountant life. Retskuo constantly finds herself doing karaoke where she uses death metal to let out all her rage she might find throughout her day, but keeps that private.
The reason why I like Aggretsuko so much personally probably comes through the enticing storyline and characters. Every person in the show to me are charming, and interesting, and that alone is not common to me. I’m certainly not the biggest fan of shows and movies out there, and finding a show plot I find myself genuinely being interested in comes very unlikely, but Aggretsuko overtook all those expectations. The animation style of the show is super cute and overall just pleasant to look at. I’ve rewatched Aggretsuko about 4 times now and still continue to find it fun and entertaining.
My favorite characters, Wahsimini and Gori, find themselves being the closest companions in Retsuko’s life throughout the show. They try their best comfort her in her new relationships, despite having little to no personal experiences with love on their own. Washimi being the extremly professional one of the duo, makes sure things are to her liking. Meanwhile, Gori has a bubbly personality and tries her best to have fun whenever she does things. Their two personalities mix perfectly and they have so many funny moments on screen. That actually goes the same with tons of other characters in Aggretsuko which also adds who the list of why I might adore this show as much as I do.
If you ever have any spare time and would perhaps be willing to try something new on Netflix, take it from me and try Aggretsuko, you might find yourself enjoying it like I do!
