An earthquake is a sudden release of energy released from the earth’s crust causing tectonic plates to shift and lead to that shaking. Tectonic plates are a part of the earth’s surface directly above the starting point of an earthquake.
The first earthquake was around 5.0 on the Richter scale. The Richter scale depends on where you measure earthquakes and how bad they are. A 5.0 and be felt and can cause minor damage, like furniture can move, the floorboards can move and walls can break. This earthquake was located in the epicenter. The epicenter is the location directly above it on the surface of the earth.
Some people say that they felt it and some didn’t. It was a big earthquake even though some didn’t feel it. It depends on what part of South Gate you live in and that can determine if you would feel it or not. Like for example we interviewed Joey, an 8th grader if he felt the earthquake and he said he did and as we asked him if he was scared he said that he was not scared surprisingly.
When do you think the next earthquake will strike? Here are some tips to prepare for an actual earthquake.
1. Sit under a sturdy table
2. Cover both your neck and head
3. Stay away from windows or anything that can break or fall
4. Make sure to find a clear and safe way to exit
