During the month of February we celebrate valentines day, throughout the whole month we celebrate something important, Black History. This month is an important way to show our appreciation for the black representatives who helped shape the community for the better.
For Black History Month Southeast Middle School leadership decided to host a door decorating contest. If a homeroom decided to participate in the contest they would spin a wheel and be randomly an influential/important black historical figure.
Black History

8th grader Angel Ramirez said, “Black History Month is a symbol of advancement in society… before we didn’t accept everyone, but now we learned to accept everyone and everything.”
A SEMS student Aubrey Martinez, gave her thoughts on the why Black History month is celebrated she said “If not for actions taken, Black people wouldn’t be in the same room as us.”
We asked the leadership students to elaborate on what Southeast Middle School was doing for Black History month. A student from Ms. Tarr’s leadership, Jamila Villalba, said, “ Mostly every homeroom will have a door decorated to represent a person that made an impact in history.”
For example, Mr. Quach’s homeroom decorated their door of Jackie Robinson who became the first Black pla yer in the MLB. He decorated his door with pictures of Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Mrs. Garnica did Frederick Douglass who was a freed slave, and abolitionist against slavery. She decorated her door with drawings and a paper chain to symbolize breaking away from slavery.
This is important to remember what these people did for the advancements in our society, so our school celebrates with the door contest.
