What do you think Memorial Day is?
We asked students why we celebrate Memorial Day, and 8th grader Joseph said he didn’t know what Memorial Day represented. 8 grader Christian U said, “It’s about presidents celebrating presidents.”
However, when we asked 7th graders Jacob P. and Tira C they said a day to honor/remember people who’ve died in the war.
8th grader Desiree said it’s a day to remember veterans(there’s a difference and that’s veterans is for those who are alive not dead). 8th grader Jasmine thought it’s about people that died in the war.
Memorial Day is a day for honoring those who have died in service to the country. It’s always on the last Monday of May.
History Lesson
The first ever Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30th,1868 according to “Kid Explorer”.
Also according to “Kid Explorer”, Memorial day existed as Decoration Day first, where people would go and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers
Memorial Day used to be on the 30th of May but due to the Monday holiday law passed in 1971 Memorial Day shifted to the last Monday in May.
Many students only know about Memorial Day because it gives them a three-day weekend.
Do you celebrate Memorial Day?
We asked them if they celebrate it and they all said no or kind of do.
