March is Women’s History Month. What struggles are women and girls still facing?
Women have fought for their rights for centuries, and still, inequality prevails between men and women. To prove that this still happens, especially in schools, students conducted a social experiment.
The social experiment had a male student wear a tank top that looked like an undershirt to school and a girl would wear a tank top with covered-up sleeves. Another girl, who covered up with pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and even a beanie. Those three separately walked past different workers around the school to see if they would get dress-coded or not.
Out of the three, who do YOU think got the dress code? That’s right, the two girls.A male student broke the dress code but faced no consequences. The reason they had gotten dress coded was because of the fact they weren’t “covered up”.
The true question though, why are girls and women get called out for something that they choose to wear yet they pointed out that if a guy had done the same, no one would even say a word. They should enforce these rules to both groups, not just one group unfairly.
The male student stated “I felt normal I guess because I kinda expected it… but it was a scary experience.” Another stated “I had a feeling cause mainly they don’t target boys, you would have to stick out and most likely have to be naked for them to call you out.”
We need to put an end to this unfair mindset or judgment, whatever you want to call it. Something needs to change, perhaps some extra training that includes more information about the dress code, or making it less strict since male students often gain leniency on these rules.
