Elephants are incredibly strong mammals, but even with such strength, elephants remain one of Earth’s endangered species as they are hunted for their ivory, also known as their tusk and teeth. These majestic beings originate from Africa and they enjoy large bodies of water. Elephants love playing in mud and have a very child-like soul but that doesn’t mean that you should go playing around with one.
Elephants also reside in the San Diego Safari Park where you can view them for yourself. Though they can deal
with hot weather, just like us humans, they enjoy shaded structures. Elephants have a very hungry spirit as well! Elephants eat up to 16 hours a day and they can eat up to 330 pounds of food! Therefore it is very likely for you to see them eating.
At the San Diego Zoo, they have a very special place where you might see wildlife care experts scrubbing an elephant’s foot. And you might see the elephants themselves following their own healthcare and wellness routines. You can also chat with the wildlife care experts and ask them questions about their jobs. So it’d be nice to check that out at the Elephant Care Center at the San Diego Zoo.
Furthermore, we went to the San Diego Safari Park to see the elephants for ourselves. We also interviewed an elephant worker at the zoo who told us about her life with the elephants. In general, the trip was very fun yet sweaty. This was what our interviewee had to say:
What do you do as a zookeeper?
I’m not a zoo keeper or a wildlife specialist. I just work here at the elephants talking about them and educating the people who come by.
What is your favorite thing about elephants?
They’re so goofy they are always playing around with each other. The other week we had one of them push each other into the pool down there. It’s part of their personality.
Why did you become a zookeeper at the safari park?
I’ve always loved animals, so it’s kind of an easy choice for me. I actually started on the zipline but now interacting and being with them is nice.
