Eating 12 grapes
A common tradition Eating 12 grapes on New Year’s. This tradition originated in Spain. Its name originally las doce uvas de la suerte meaning “The twelve lucky grapes” in English. At midnight people eat 12 grapes for good luck. These green grapes all represent each month in the next year.
Time Square
In New York, there’s a famous tradition of the New Year’s Eve ball. On New Year all of New York’s people hold their breath as the clock hits midnight on December 31 calling in the new year. When it hits 12 the whole crowd cheers and fireworks light up welcoming in the new year.
Dress in dots
There are some world traditions we may not know for example Wearing polka dots this tradition comes from the Philippines. They do this because they believe that round shapes bring good luck and success. If you want to get the money next year you’d have to fill your pocket with coins on New Year’s Eve to bring in money.
Eating pigs
In Australia, they eat pigs on New Year’s Eve since they’re supposed to bring in good luck for the new year and sip on red wine with some cinnamon.
Smashing plates
In Denmark, they welcome the new year by breaking things. They smash plates at their neighbor’s or friends’ houses to celebrate the new year. It’s also believed that giant piles of broken dishes will bring in good luck.
Wearing white
In Brazil, they wear white on New Year’s Eve. But why white out of every fun color? Well, they wear white since it gives good luck and peace.
How do the students at Southeast celebrate? We interviewed 6 students from every grade SEMS and DREAMS to ask about their New Year traditions. We also went and asked about their thoughts and opinions on a new year coming. Let’s see how everyone welcomes in their new year.
How do you feel about New Year’s coming?
Nicholas Mendoza, an 8th grader in DREAMS student says. “ Excited because it’s a new year and hopefully it’s gonna be a better year than this year.” Delilah Sanchez a 7th grader in dreams says “I don’t know it’s like whatever” when asked how she feels about New Year’s coming. Vivetta Garcia a 7th grader in SEMS says that she’s “Excited.” for the new year.
What special way do you celebrate New Year’s?
Daniel Hernandez a 6 grader in DREAMS told us his way of celebrating New Years ” I celebrate New Year with my aunt we wear pajamas and we watch movies.”
Jasmine Mejia, an 8 SEMS student says “Dressing up in all red and feasting” That’s her special way of celebrating New Year’s. Amanda Gonzales, a 7th sems grader told us that “Being together with my family.” thats her way of celebrating New Year’s. We’re all different people with different ways of celebrating so take pride in that and have a good New Year’s celebration.
