Thanksgiving originated in Plymouth or modern-day Massachusetts, and first celebrated in 1621 with food shared by the pilgrims and Wampanoag people.
Now families around the U.S. celebrate Thanksgiving. Most common traditions usually include food like Turkey. Most people also play games there or watch sports.
Controversy
The first Thanksgiving, originally believed they celebrated in thanks to the natives for helping the Pilgrims in their time of need. Afterwards years of mass genocide would happen. Even the day before the first Thanksgiving the Pilgrims murdered around 700 Pequot people.
Most people know that the Europeans and the Wampanoag people created an alliance. Still, the truth appears very differently as it’s due to how the Europeans brought diseases that ravaged native groups.
Before the alliance formed the Pilgrims had stolen from the Wampanoag’s winter supplies like food and water, there is also no mention of the Wampanoag people receiving an invitation to the celebration. 90 Wamponoag soldiers went because they heard gunshots.
After Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims kidnapped, murdered, enslaved, executed, and imprisoned native people. The Pilgrims stole the native people’s land and committed many acts of genocide against them like the famous boarding schools where they killed more than 500 boys and girls.
