Eighth graders at Southeast Middle School recently completed their Zone of Choice applications for their future high schools. We interviewed both DREAMS and SEMS 8th graders and got to know their top highschool choices.
Most eighth graders we have spoken to plan to attend Southeast High School as their top choice. We also noticed that those who are already in the DREAMS magnet program are planning on staying in it and those who attend in the main school do not plan on applying for the magnet program.
8th grader Camila Camacho who is in the magnet program at Southeast middle school was the only eighth grader who did not apply for Southeast High School but instead applied for Diego Rivera Learning Complex.
Highschoolers from South East High School, South Gate High School, and Legacy High School were then asked what they like about their school and why they think eighth graders should apply for their schools.
Ninth grader German Reyes who is in the magnet program at Southeast High School claims that eighth graders at Southeast Middle School should apply to Southeast High School because he thinks “it’s a good school.” Something he likes about Southeast High School is that there are only six periods instead of eight which, in his opinion, makes it seem like the day goes by faster.
“[The program is] big and there’s a lot of choices to choose from in what you want to be,” Edgar Moran, ninth grader in the Visual and Arts Performance Program at Southeast High School, claims. He also states that he likes the space it has, has multiple teachers, and it’s bigger than Southeast Middle School next door.
11th grader Yaneli Merida who attends South Gate High School said, “Yes they should [apply to Southgate High School] because our school is very helpful and they give you a lot of opportunities for you so you can get into a good college.”
“I think eighth graders should apply for South Gate High School because it has made me have lots of opportunities that are helpful for my future and has also given me many memorable friendships,” 12th grader Amanda Cruz states.
Unfortunately, we were unable to reach anybody that attends Legacy High School because we have no sort of contact with them but we are positive it is just as amazing as the rest of the other schools.
